Do YOU Know the Muffin Man?

I have been finding myself humming and singing ridiculous nursery rhymes the past few weeks. Most of Linc's activity toys (swing, bouncy chair, etc) have musical tunes.  My favorite is the music associated with the bouncy chair.  The little band of animals (dog, cat, and bear) are called "Bobblin' Buddies"  (cause they bobble and they are friends in a band).  The Bobblin' Buddies play jazzy versions of the classics like:

    • If you're happy and you know it clap your hands
    • Itsy Bitsy Spider
    • Do You Know the Muffin Man
    • Farmer in the Dell
    • Pop Goes the Weasel
    • Bah Bah Black Sheep
I've spent way too much time thinking about these songs and trying to decipher the music.  It has taken me weeks to figure out some of these tunes and then all of a sudden I will burst into song with the baby and I'm snapping my fingers in a jazzy way singing the Muffin Man song or making up my best attempt at Ferre Jacques.  Deep within me these tunes emerge and I find I remember the lyrics.  It's like commercial jingles.  They are so catchy.

The more I think about it, the more I think these songs need a major upgrade.  Who the hell is the muffin man anyway? I don't know any muffin men. And Linc certainly does not know any muffin men.  They don't exist anymore.   When I was a kid, there used to be an old man who would drive a bread truck around the neighborhood selling pan dulce.  That is the closest to a muffin man I have ever been.  Roger reminded me that Laura Palmer called Bob the Muffin Man in her diary.  This almost ruined the song for me, with the image of Bob invading the silly songs I sing to my kid.  I've even tried making up different lyrics to the song...like "Do you know your UPS man" or "Do you know the garbage man".  They aren't as catchy.  It's cool to re-learn these songs. Even if they are kind of ridiculous. The kid seems to like it when I sing to him and he loves the jazz snap, so I'll keep singing the songs or making up my own lyrics.

    You Make Lovin' Fun

I'm in love...and his name is Lincoln (sorry Roger...I love you too but I've blogged about that plenty already :).

This kid just gets more and more fun the older and more aware he gets.  I can't even believe that I can love a little being so much and he has only been in our lives for a couple of months.  It is all the little things that just make me swoon.  Like the first smile of the morning, when his eyes flutter open and he turns to me and realizes I am looking at him.  He makes a big grin at me every morning and it makes my heart melt.  I love how adorable he looks when I am feeding him--snuggling against mom is his favorite pasttime. Or the cooing and talking he does when I change his diaper.  It is like he knows I've got his back and will always make sure his bum is clean and is letting me know he appreciates it.  Or any time he does something for the first time (grabbing a rattle, rolling over, reaching for things).  I am filled with pride and enthusiasm watching this little guy figure out the world around him.

People have been asking me how I like being home and I absolutely love being a stay-at-home mom.  I'm not bored or anxious or depressed.  The time just flies with the things we do together during the day. I get to act as silly as I want and he doesn't judge, in fact, the sillier the better according to his reactions.  Every day is filled with playing, singing, and dancing.  We work on developmental milestones like rolling over, batting at things, baby pullups, etc.  We go for walks and exercise our Roostie.  Even when this kid is screaming in public when we are trying to have a nice dinner with friends I don't get mad. Mostly, I feel bad for the people who have to listen to him scream cause they aren't used to it.  Even when he is at his worst, a little smile after he has calmed down makes me forget that he was screaming. (As you can tell, I'm a pushover with a smile from my kid...I better watch out or this kid is going to walk all over me when he gets older :) ). I'm sure one day I'll get angry at him but right now it is nothing but positive vibes toward the kid.
