    Been Lookin' Forward...

to this day for so long.  Start of vacation.  After several strenuous months at work, I hit a major milestone on a project.  I feel good.  Much was accomplished and now I am rewarding myself with a vacay.  Was even able to leave by 3pm and go to afternoon class!  A little exercise before a long flight was just what I needed.  Vacation preparation rituals completed ( packed, call family, put hold on paper), and now just chillin' at the house before departure. Hitcha' back in a week.

    groovy

Oh my gosh.  This msn spaces background is AWESOME!  Scroll down for maximum effect.  Check out the groovy dancing . You can just barely see the  red vinyl LP and record player. Why have I never noticed this one before?   Do you think all the dancers are Indian?

I am so confused by this image.

    Rockin' the Gina 'fro

Ever since I moved to Seattle, I have taken to blow drying my hair straight in the morning. I have always had a gentle wave to my hair, but it really didn't become fro-like until I moved to Seattle--that is when the Gina 'fro, AKA Mexi-Curl, appeared due to wet/humid weather.   I've never really liked the mexi-curl because of its messy/out of control nature, especially near my face--the little hairs go all wild. It is not a uniform curl, just a mid-way point between kind of straight and kind of wavy.   A couple of weeks ago I got my hair trimmed and we added a few layers to help with the awkward stage.  I spoke with my stylist about the mexi-curl to let her know what I dislike about it.  I also got some new hair product while at the salon. Voila! All of a sudden the mexi-curl is a legitimate hairdo. Amazing what some good hair product and a saavy hairstylist can do.  I've been rocking the Gina 'fro recently and it is kind of growing on me.  It cuts the grooming time in half in the morning. I just spray the product, scrunch it a bit, and presto--hairdo is done. No need for the tiresome roller brush and blowdryer to straighten. The added bonus--I get lots of kisses from Roger in the morning. I'm thinkin' he has a mexi-curl fetish :)

learning new terms by singing to the dog

As previously mentioned, I'm fond of singing hip hop to the dog. I like to modify the words to customize them to the dog's situation. I usually do this when I first get home b/c I typically listen to KUBE on the commute so the songs are fresh in my head.  Lately I can't get that crappy E-40 song out of my head.  Last night I was singing "Ghost Walk the Roo" per a modified E-40 lyric and realized I have no idea what "ghost ride the whip" meant in the song.  This is why urban dictionary is so cool.  I can't believe that this song is about doing such a stupid thing.  Well, I guess I can believe it since so many songs are about flashing your bling, wearing jewelry on your teeth, and otherwise demonstrating how rich/important/sexy/etc the artist is.  Why is doing donuts in your car (while outside the vehicle) the hot, hip, activity to brag about?  I just don't get it. It isn't cool at all.

    food hypocrisy

Why is it that I am 'morally' opposed to eating veal but I find lamb delectable?  I always used to say that the reason why I don't eat veal is because I don't want to eat babies...but I am finding that we eat lamb fairly regularly now and I have no issues with eating those little guys.  Like tonight's meal: Lamb Burgers. Yummies. Maybe I should try some veal, I hear it is quite succulent.

Two mini blogs about food means I need to eat some lunch.

How can ice cream cake get any better?

When it is a Gelato Ice Cream Cake!  We just had a work bday celebration with a raspberry gelato cholocate mousse cake.  Oh my! It came with fresh fruit, chocolate shavings, and dollops of whipped cream on top.  I'm in gelato heaven...and it was the real deal gelato too. None of that fake american gelato shit.

    Mushing the Dog

The new fun thing Rog and I have been doing is riding the Xooter while exercising the dog. This forces her to get more vigorous exercise and allows us to cover more ground in the same 1/2 hour exercise period. Riding the xooter while exercising Roo is mentally challenging because you have to simultaneously manage the dog while watching for rocks and sticks on the sidewalk.  I've tried roller skating with the dog in the past and it is quite scary and dangerous to my health, so I am not going to do that anymore.

Sometimes, it is fun to let the dog pull you.  The most important thing while xooting is to keep the dog running and managing her speed.   You can't let her dawdle or sniff or else you'll go flying off the xooter and fall on your face.  You also can't let her gain speed faster than the xooter goes b/c then it jerks you around and you fall off.  While managing the dog, you also need to hold onto the expando-leash while gripping the handlebars.  It can be a bit tricky...especially if there are any grade changes or the pavement is bumpy. Linear paths are better than large expanses of area (where she could potentially go off track chasing roosters, ducks, etc).  It is complicated but worth it because it provides some diversity  to the dog walking responsibilities.   The xooter is pretty cool and sized just right for me.  I noticed several young kids looking at me enviously as I zoomed by on my xooter. I've also seen many questioning looks from adults like, "who is that woman wearing work clothes on a scooter?"

Last night I experimented with "motivational speaking" to the dog while xooting, or as Rog aptly put it, "Mushing the Dog."  This ended up being quite effective.  I kept a running dialogue with her to keep her going at a consistent pace. I used an array of expressions to motivate the dog.  "That's right, you can do it!", "Good girl, keep it going",  "Woo! You can do it, Roo!",  "Come on, keep it up!", etc  all in a very upbeat, positive tone.  It is all about the tone with the dog.  I could be saying, "You are such a little dipshit", but if I said it in a soothing, motivational tone, she would probably respond the same way.  I'm going to try this again tonight and see what kind of results I get.  She was totally tanked after the ride last night...just what she needed!

    Munch

I was contemplating the use of the word "Munch" in product names this morning and came up with the following:
There have got to be more, but that is all I can think of for now.  I don't know why I think that word is so funny, but it is.   I  love all of the above snacks.  I wonder if I can make a sweeping generalization and say that if the word "munch" is in the product name, I will like it?

Whoever came up with the product name "Crunch 'n Munch" is brilliant. What a great name for a snack.

What size am I anyway?!? Depends.....

This weekend I tried to explain to Roger the illogical system we have for women's clothing sizes.  I explained that my body has changed in the past year due to Kajukenbo and the range of sizes I can wear has actually broadened to include some smaller sizes. He didn't seem to understand this.  Why would my clothing size vary so much?  I started explaining the typical rules of thumb for women's clothing sizes.  Once I started to describe it to him, I realized how absolutely silly the whole thing is.  Not only are there an array of caveats and exceptions to the rules but you have to accept that sizes/cuts vary by manufacturer and store as well.  The numbering system is pretty much meaningless in today's world,  yet we continue to use it.

My explanation went something like this:
    • Junior's sizes are odd numbered sizes like 3, 5, 7, 9 but never even numbers. I tend to wear a lot of juniors clothes
    • Women's sizes are even numbers like 2, 4, 6, but never odd numbers
    • Petites are smaller cuts of women's sizes for shorter/smaller ladies. I can wear a lot of petite pants for work b/c of the shorter length.
    • Sometimes clothing sizes are combined for juniors and women's and so the label will say: 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, etc
    • The clothing isn't based on bust size
    • Pants are rarely based on length/waist size like men's pants.
    • Lots of times women's clothes, particularly shirt and blouses are simply XS, S, M, L, XL
    • My size ranges from a 2 to a 6, typically.  It really varies.  For example, as of this year I can now fit into a women's size 2 pants (which I have never been able to do), but I consider myself more of a 5/6 and have considered myself that size since high school. I can wear a 2, but I can rarely can fit into a size 3.  I can wear size 4 in some pants and skirts, depending on the length and cut.  If the option is size 3 or size 5, I wear a 5 almost exclusively.  I may be a size 5 at one store, but I can be a 2 in another store or even an 8, depending on the brand (Roger found this the most shocking, the sheer range of sizes that I might fit into depending on brand).
    • I am typically an S or an M for shirts/t-shirts.  I have to look at the cut and whether it is 100% cotton to decide which one will be best.  My shoulders are broad and so sometimes a small is too tight under my armpits and I have to wear a medium. If it is a stretchy fabric then I can wear a small. If it is 100% cotton and small then I can't put it into the dryer. This is why we bicker when he tries to do laundry and shrinks my clothes. He has no idea which ones need to air dry and which ones are acceptable to go into the dryer. Honestly, it isn't his fault it is so freaking confusing. After many fights and crying episodes where 'my favorite X' was destroyed, his default is to now air dry anything that seems suspect....or just let me do the laundry instead.
    • The size standards vary by country. For example, I am actually a size 10 or 12 in Australian sizes.
By the end of my ten minute explanation, Roger looked more confounded than when I started.   We've lived together for 10 years and he never knew that there was a difference between juniors, misses, women's sizes, petite clothes, etc. Not only that, he had a whole series of questions I couldn't answer after my weak attempt at explaining the system. Why we all put up with this confusing system is amazing to me.  I think everyone can agree that the standard convention for women's clothing sizes is out of date and lame.  Clothing sizes vary by the manufacturer, store, etc.  All it does is make women feel bad about themselves when they can't fit into a size they normally purchase.  Why have a system that just gives women body image issues?   It is what we've got for now, but it sucks, and all women have to navigate through the quagmire of sizes to find the 'right fit'.  The obvious question: why not use a numbering system like men's clothes for  pants (length/width), collar size, etc?  I guess because of all our curves and stuff...the available range of standard cut clothes available on the rack would have to quadruple to accomodate the boobs and hip measurements.  After talking about it,  I did a mini web search and discovered the history behind the naming protocol (though the article is kind of lame) and an interesting article about changing sizes for older women.  In fact it seems some manufacturers have their own ideas about who their ideal customer is, and they have their designers base their sizing on that ideal customer, aka a "fit model".  I read another article that talked about 'vanity sizing', where manufacturers have changed the numbering systems to sell more products.  For example, when something that should be a size 12 is labeled a size 10 so that women 1) feel good about themselves and 2) become loyal to that brand (b/c it makes them feel good about themselves so they buy the item)!  It is enough to make any lady crazy. This is why you should not buy clothing for your woman unless it is a no-brainer kind of thing like a t-shirt or a nightie or something.

People think women just like trying on clothes at the store.  It isn't a question of like. Women HAVE to try on clothes in order to find something that fits right.

I might add that most women can eyeball some clothes without having to try them on (i.e. shirts, skirts, tanks). It is an art, really.

    Napping to Golf

This weekend I watched excessive amounts of The Masters. You may be thinking, why did you WATCH GOLF this weekend? Well, Roger had to work this weekend in prep for a business trip and I wanted to hang out with him. I was also feeling lazy and could really only motivate to do laundry (six loads and counting) and a dump run this weekend. So we hunkered down in the basement on Saturday afternoon while it was pouring rain and watched some tube. There are some sporting events I find great pleasure in watching and The Masters is one of them. The coverage is awesome.  For one, it is available on HDTV and it looks amazing.  Secondly, the course at Augusta is simply gorgeous.  The landscaping is in full bloom with rhodies, azaleas, camelias, flowering trees, etc.  The course is bountiful, green, well manicured (though I don't even want to think about the runoff from fertilizers), and the coverage includes these amazing sweeping aerial views of the course. Those aerial flights over the course are so cool and one of my favorite things about the coverage.   I love the comentary in hushed voices and the sound of all the birds chirping in the background.   I don't typically watch golf on TV, but The Masters is something different. It is the only golf I watch on TV.  It is quite soothing and peaceful to watch.  In fact, one of the things I enjoy most about watching The Masters is that it facilitates cat naps while viewing.  Watch some rounds, snooze, wake up, watch some more golf, snooze, repeat.  After golf and napping on Saturday, I found myself sitting in front of the TV on Sunday, glued to the TV for about 2 hours because I wanted to see who would get the green jacket. I didn't even realize I was sitting there oohing and aahing (under the pretext of folding clothes) until Roger started laughing at me and my rapt attention to the golf.  Too bad I've never even played a round of golf...I bet I would like it.  I've been to the driving range and that was fun.

    Sadies

The other night we were watching Veronica Mars (which is the best show on TV in my opinion) and the episode involved a Sadie Hawkins dance.  I noted that none of the couples were dressed alike.  What's up with that? That isn't a real sadie hawkins dance.  At my high school there were two 'rules' to sadie hawkins dance: 1) the girl asked the boy and 2) the couple dressed the same.  Yeah, it is kind of silly, now that I think of it, but I did in fact go to three sadie hawkins dances and for each one I dressed the same as my boyfriend at the time. It was fun to go shopping with them and find something that both parties wanted to wear.  I asked Rog what they did at Reno High and he said they didn't have sadie hawkins dance. WTF!

Here is my question for my blog readers:  Did you have sadie hawkins and if so, did you have to dress the same as your date? Was that just some weird thing my high school did?

    Reducing my vices

When I get busy at work, I tend to revive my poor health habits. They include:
    • No breakfast
    • Drinking excessive amounts of coffee (I was up to 4 large cups of rotgut a day)
    • Drinking lots of soda (one a day after shifting from the coffee)
    • Eating lots of sugar to help keep me awake and alert
    • Eating crappy food (fast food or few veggies because I 'don't have the time' to eat better)
    • Drinking beer when I get home to drown away my worries. I'm not talking excessive amounts of beer or binge drinking, but regularly 1-2 pints a night.
    • Sleeping less than 6 hours a night
    • Little to no exercise
As a result I always felt tired, headachy, and grumpy.  Last month I 'snapped to' and realized that just because I am busy for the next month doesn't mean I need to send myself to an early grave because I am 'too busy' to be better to my body.  As such, I have revised the poor health habits to remind myself why I work hard. I work hard so I can also play hard.   I can't play hard if I am sickly.  Since this realization a few weeks ago I have:
    • Started eating breakfast. Even if it just a roll, a piece of fruit, or a packet of flavored oatmeal I eat at my desk.
    • Dropped my coffee consumption to 1-2 moderately sized cups of coffee.
    • No soda in the afternoon. Anytime I crave a soda or coffee, I instead drink a glass of water or juice instead.  I had one soda last week and none so far this week.
    • No sugar.  Current vice is excessive amounts of 'light' popcorn. Not as satisfying as 'buttery' popcorn, but at least I get this stuff for free at work and it isn't sugar. That said, I gorged myself on candy last weekend while watching the Final Four.
    • Eating a good sized salad at least once a day for lunch or dinner or both, plus some veggies or at least a piece of fruit at lunch.
    • Occasional beer.  Also use the approach of drinking a glass of water first before having a beer to prevent dehydration. I still have a beer, but only a couple of times a week.
    • Still not getting much sleep, but at least have decided to not set the alarm before 5:30 a.m. anymore.  I have been chronically snoozing this week and all it does is irritate Roger.  I am trying to get at least six hours of sleep a night and get at least 7 hours of sleep a night on the weekends.
    • Go to class in the evenings, even if it means I have to work from home that night.  Eh, this one I've been 'hit or miss' with. Sometimes I can't leave in time, but at least I am going 1-2 x's a week now plus tai chi.  At least that is 4-5 hours of exercise a week in addition to any dog walking I do in the evenings. I was skipping class all the time last month. I am now leaving work at 5:30 so I can make it to class...Whee!

One explanation for my dislike of baseball

Groan. It is baseball season.  I used to think baseball was an ok sport, and yeah, it is fun to watch live in a stadium. After moving to Seattle and experiencing Mariners fans, I have to say I now despise baseball.  I don’t know why, but I find Mariners fans totally annoying.  I don’t have the SODO Mojo or any of that crap.  Once baseball season starts, that is all anyone seems to want to gab about, and I just don’t care.  Enough already.  I’m glad that it seems they will have a crappy season, so I don’t have to hear about them.  Afterall, nobody gives a rip about Seattle sports except for people who live in the NW.   I know these feelings of hatred toward Mariners fans are not reasonable.  That said, Mariners fans ruined baseball for me. The only thing that might be worse than a Mariners fan is a Huskies football fan.  Huskies fans are near rabid about the team.  They can't seem to stop talking about dem Dawgs.

I write these things and it makes me seem like I don’t like sports or support the local sports teams.  That is not the case. I quite enjoy watching sports.  I have been a solid Sonics and Seahawks fan as soon as I took up Seattle residence.  It isn’t Seattle sports teams I have a problem with. It is the fanatics who support the teams.

    the new things I see

Now that it is spring and daylight savings just happened, I am actually getting home while it is still light out.  That is nice.  Just got back from a walk with the dog.  There were these huge, gray, ominous storm clouds charging across the sky.  They looked so layered, textured, deep gray, and visibly moving toward the Lake.  The new 'hood allows for many opportunities to gaze at the sky or nature at work.  I spend a lot of time looking up at the clouds that hover around the Lake and hillsides that fringe it.  We seem to have a microclimate here with the water and undeveloped acreage at Seward Park.  Windy stormy conditions drop down right before a heavy rain.  A couple of weeks ago, I sat on the couch and watched lightening strike twice  in Seward Park.

I never really looked up at the sky that much in the old 'hood--except to look at planes flying overhead or to glower at the crows that would taunt Roo.  My gaze was much more at the ground level, surveying my surroundings and all the activity along the street and sidewalk.  Down here, it is ok to just let my gaze wander because I don't have to worry about getting hit by a car or running into someone on the sidewalk.  Instead I can keep a look out for birds or ducks, check out the clouds, or let my eyes wander the surface of the lake.  A very peaceful way to end a busy day. I noticed today that I even walk slower around here than I did in the old 'hood.  I just naturally stroll,  even when wet and stormy.  As dark as it can get during a storm, it is vibrant blue and green around here when it is sunny.  I can't wait for summer. Let's get to it already so we can start swimmin'!

    Sense of Accomplishment

I had a rare weekend filled with a huge sense of accomplishment.  Why?

    1) I woke up early Saturday morning and got my oil changed before the place got crowded.

    2) I cleaned out and organized the garage on Saturday.  Since we emptied the storage unit out, we could barely park one car in the two-car garage.  I tidied up and organized all the bins, boxes, etc.  It took all Saturday afternoon. I need to do a little bit more organization (like finding good places for all the tools), but starting next weekend, I think there will actually be room for two cars in our garage!  What a feat.  I don't know why I am most proud of this effort, but I am. I kept walking around inside the garage on Sunday with a big grin on my face.  Roger even rode the scooter around in the garage...because he could. It was funny. I totally felt like my dad on Saturday. I was cleaning the garage, listening to classic rock on the radio, putzing about the garage/yard. That was totally something my dad used to do--hang out in the garage and do projects while listening to the radio (usually a Dodgers game).  I socialized and met several neighbors as well.  I am really liking how friendly everyone is in the neighborhood.

    2) I did some container gardening.  Cleaned up old potted plants, pruned old foliage refreshed containers with new color, fertilized, etc.  I didn't realize how many potted plants I had at the old house.  They were all looking a little scraggly.  I am so excited to live some place with full sun. The backyard is going to look so colorful come summer!

    3) Tidied up the backyard (associated with container gardening).

    4) Planted a little space on the back side of the house.  I have a mini herb garden started and spruced up the street appeal on our back street frontage, including amending the soil, building a mini retaining wall, weeding, cleaning out some drains, etc. Now, if only the contractors next door will finish so the ugly Honey Bucket will go away. Then I will be happy.

    5) Sunday morning we learned the last moves of the Tai Chi form we are studying "Lee's Modified Yang Style Tai Chi Chu'an".  The form is 75 moves long.  Though we tend to learn 1-2 moves a week, we learned 12 yesterday.  Yes, twelve.  I am feeling pumped up about learning the entire form. I just had a shit eating grin on my face after class.    All day I felt so proud to know the whole form.  We started learning it in September. Now it will just take the rest of my life to refine and deepen my understanding of the movements.
